Janeane Garofalo loves to meet and hear from her fans, who, after all, are a lot more emotionally stable than her comedy buddies. (However, one of the enduring mysteries surrounding her is why a woman so smart and funny attracts so many many humorless and dense fans.)

She realizes her admirers made her what she is today. She loves it when people approach her in restaurants and tell her how great "The Truth about Cats and Dogs" was. It's her favorite movie too.

She spends hours talking to admirers after shows and premieres and her gratitude to them is unending. In her "crafty" downtime on movie and television sets, she knits sweaters and scarves for her devotees. She also appreciates the not-inconsiderable swag they send her since Uncle Rupie Murdoch at Fox barely pays her enough for working on "24" to keep her in lattes and her dogs in kibble.

[Update: Janeane Garofalo's manager, Kara Welker, now also manages -- ta-da -- YouTube star Chad Vader! Yes, the boys behind Darth Vader's loser brother, Aaron Yonda and Matt Sloan. Welker says, "Funny is funny, and once you hook into that audience, they're there for good." (New York Times) That doesn't explain why some fans think Janeane Garofalo stopped being funny after 9/11, though. Insert your own joke here.]

[Trivia note: Kara Welker was Janeane Garofalo's assistant on "The MatchMaker."]

A seasonal warning

Do not, we repeat, do not send her any Christmas gifts. As a militant atheist, Janeane hates Christmas and everything it stands for. She refuses to celebrate it with her friends and family.

(Another complication: her family drinks, and as a stone-cold alcoholic, Janeane can't. Gifts during the Christmas season just enrage her. Instead of exchanging presents, Janeane sends a big check to the godless folk at the American Civil Liberties Union so that they can do an extraordinary rendition on this holiday.

(She spends the rest of the reason saying "Bah, humbug," and telling little children in Macy's where she has a part-time job selling Sephora cosmetics there is no Santa Claus.

(On Christmas day, she dines alone at a Chinese restaurant and goes home to her Village apartment where she drinks herself into a coma while chain smoking English Ovals and watching DVDs of "The Larry Sanders Show," sobbing uncontrollably, and wailing, "Why did you have to leave me, Garry?")
